Help me understand the VTS - Background: We used to be totally outsourced and paid by the drink (in this case gigabytes), we now own the hardware. We eliminated tapes altogether and have a larger VTS. The VTS is being replicated off site. I mention the replication because depending upon answers below I understand there is software for consolidation etc. and I would need to understand potential impact of running this type of software on the replication!
I am trying to get a clear understanding on how to calculate how much is in use on the VTS, or how much is left.
Scenario, a virtual tape is created and a file is written. Since a virtual tape has been created does the unused space just site there, or is there software behind the scenes allowing the unused to be used, although on the one had is is not unused because it is part of the virtual volume. We have compression turned on as well, does this impact the size to virtual volume tapes up.
This leads to figuring out how much is used, do you calculate the number of volumes by the allocation sizes (compressed), or do you add up all the files on the system.
Sorry for length question... |

I may not be able to answer your question, but in our shop we have a web interface to login to the VTS and it shows how much each cluster is utilized & free. |
