Hi,
I can see there are a number of uncataloged tape datasets which has expired, I want to delete them all.
The problem is that the datasets are with the same name (XXXX.YYYY.ZZZZ)
but with diffrent CDATE, EXPDT and VOLUME??
Please help me to delete these datasets.
Also this datasets is not getting expired automatically, how can we rectify this problem?
Thanks,
Manddep |

The first thing is to go and speak with your storage management group, explain the problem to them and they should take the appropriate actions for you. |

The people responsible for storage media etc. etc.
They implement and maintain the retention policies for data within your organisation. If you do not know who they are, you will need to ask a peer. |

There is no such group in here!
There is only one senior member in our organisation and remain busy. I can not ask him?
Can you people help me out? |

You probably cannot resolve this issue, then. If you cannot talk to your site support people, there's pretty much nothing you can do -- only your site support team knows the details about how the site tape management policies work and are put together. |

Well, let's try to be helpful ..................
Which TMS is implemented and used.
Have you read the appropriate manuals for said TMS.
What is the status of the volumes within said TMS.
What is the required status of the volumes within the said TMS.
Do you have the knowledge (from the manuals you've read) and the authority to change the status within the TMS. |

Now that look likes some helpfull comment!
I am given the task to delete the uncataloged datasets, which I have listed using the TMSGRW.
I tried deleting the datasets using IEFBR14, using DISP=(MOD,DELETE)
I can see the dataset is getting deleting in the output, but still I can see the entry in the CA1? |

I missed that one first time out
Please consider this my last post within this topic
Also, would we be correct if we substituted the word knowledge for support
And as Enrico has pointed out - you DO NOT pay us to help you.
And you give us so little information as to be helpful, and then throw your toys out of the pram because we are unable, through your lack of knowledge and information, to be helpful within the constraints decided by yourself.
Well, if we are so much of a disappointment, I'm pretty sure that you have other options ............ |

Anyone who has monitored this bulletin board for any length of time at all would realize how utterly absurd this statement is. |

Actually, lots of people here share lots of knowledge.
What is really strange is that you provided nothing for us to use to help you and then you complain that you do not get what you came looking for. . .

Possibly because you are supposed to know already? I suspect your biggest problem (at least with this issue) is that you don't understand your requirement and you won't take the time to learn CA-1. |

Hi Dick,
I didn't share the information because nobody asked me to share.
And when I shared nobody wanted to see that!
My only problem is that I want to delete the uncataloged datasets.
I have got a list of more that 100,000 datasets to be deleted! and I don't know where to start? |

If your CA-1 environment is set up correctly, when a tape is expired (i.e., the date on the RETPD= or EXPDT= parameter of the LABEL has been met or exceeded), the tape should automatically move back into your scratch pool. Such a tape is not deleted -- it is in the scratch pool. The data previously on the tape is still there, but the tape is eligible to be written over whenever it is mounted. What do you mean in your post by "delete them all"? CA-1 sites do not "delete" tapes as a general rule; the tapes revert to the scratch pool and are reused upon expiration.
Your second question is a non-question. Once the current system date reaches or exceeds the expiration date set by RETPD= or EXPDT= in the LABEL parameter for the tape creation, the tape is expired. Tape expiry is a condition, it is not something physical. An expired tape is eligible to be overwritten; a non-expired tape won't be overwritten.
If your site is running any virtual tape system (VTS), be aware that CA-1 and the VTS may get out of synchronization and one may show tapes as being active that the other shows as expired. These often have to be resolved manually, either by setting them expired or by extending the expiration date (whichever is required for that tape).
In any case, unless you are willing and able to discuss these matters with your site support, you are most likely not going to get much further. This person (or persons) may very well have excellent reasons for the way the site is set up. Without actually talking to the person(s), you cannot know for sure what those reasons are and under which circumstances you would want to alter them. |

Tapes are not deleted thru JCL DISP parameter.
To delete a tape that is in SCRATCH status (remove from TMSGRW report):
1. Reuse the volume for a new file
2. Re-initialize the tape to clear the DSN field |

Robert,
That was really helpfull.
Expat/Enrico,
I would like to apologise for what I said, but it could have been avoided if you would have posted the above reply earlier.
Anyways looking forward for your support in the future.
It was a bad day for me can't tell you why!
But as they rightly said:
Everyday may not be good, but there is always something good in everyday!
Thanks all! |

Expat,
Thanks for replying and taking interest.
Well we have recently migrated from STK VSM to IBM VTS.
There are a number of old STK volumes that are dormant now and there are few files on these tapes that are uncataloged.
I wanted to delete them!
But as said by Robert and Bill we can't delete an uncatloged tape dataset!
I am reading the CA1 manuals what exactly is the lifecycle of a tape?
Please share if you have something to say!
Thanks,
Mandeep |

Well at the moment I'm at an RMM site, but in a previous life have used CA1 in batch to release tapes back into "scratch" status, or remove them from CA1, or whatever.
Code: |
//TMSUPDTE EXEC PGM=TMSUPDTE
//SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//TMSRPT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSIN DD *
VOL volser
VER DSN=dataset name
REP EXPDT=yyyy/ddd |
