Well, I saw this thread from 2nd page so I'll avoid what happened on first!... and for my .$02 I'll participate in...
the thing which can cause the problems is the expiration date. Deleting the dataset prior to its expiration date may be problematic. You can contact the tape librarian and ask that the dataset be deleted and the tape be returned to the "scratch pool".
Because if the TMS retention in place then delete will not affect that retention and tapes will not be scratched until they reach EXPDT. |

IIRC
You might see some of them because the tape on which they reside still contains active datasets
once the tape has been returned to the scratch pool You should not see them any longer |

Ok
So we can conclude that
€ We can not delete an uncataloged dataset that resides on a tape
€ The tape should be sent to the sctratch pool inorder to get it freed by all the datasets. |

both conclusions are wrong...
the second sentence has the logic reversed
the tape will be sent to the scratch pool after all the datasets have expired
anyway all depends on the meaning You assign to the word delete....
for dasd, a delete resembles closely the meaning of the word...
a listcat will not show the dataset
a listvtoc will not show the dataset
after this the dataset content might be available thru the usage of advanced tools
( at least the part that has not been overwritten )
for tapes
a listcat will not show the dataset
a <tapelistvtoc> will show the datasets on the tape
a tms query will show the dataset if the tape on which it resides is still active
after the tape has been returned to the scratch pool
a <tapelistvtoc> will show the datasets on the tape
the dataset can be accessed very simply by using the proper DD
keywords for a non cataloged dataset ( VOL=SER=... LABEL=xx,SL)
and even after a tape has been reused ( EOV marker written )
using advanced tools the data after the EOV can be recovered and used
(easier than doing it for dasd datasets)
the final answer is NO, You cannot delete tape datasets in the same sense You delete dasd datasets
( being cataloged or not is irrelevant ) |

Thanks,
That was really helpful.
I'll appreciate if can share any manual which can help to get this expert knowledge. I know the statement is contradictory as expert knowledge comes through experience, but yes, if you want to reach the TOP, you need to start from the ground level only! |

And what is the files(DSNs) are migrated? Why to awake(recall) the slepping-beauties? |

If you still see the tapes listed in TMSGRW, ensure that you are rejecting tapes in scratch status (see TMFLAGs). The DSN remains on the TMC record until the scratch tape is reused or initialized. |
