Hi,
I have a GDG with Limit 3.
I want to delete all the active and inactive generations of it.
Say..GDG BASE - a.b.c
Gen active - a.b.c.G0003V00
a.b.c.G0004V00
a.b.c.G0005V00
Gen inactive - a.b.c.G0001V00
a.b.c.G0002V00
I am able to delete the Active generations but the inactive generations which are just uncataloged do not get deleted.
Please let me know in case we can do it. I guess we have to find the VOL serial number. If this is true, how to identify the vol serial number of inactive generations which are uncataloged and not in DASD. |

Hi,
how do you know they are inactive, I can't say I've heard of active and inactive GDG's but then I've lead a sheltered life.
How are you deleting the active ones ?

Mmmmmmmmmmm, sounds like the GDG was defined with the NOSCRATCH parameter to me.
Does the "inactive" generation show up on an IDCAMS listing ??
Are they ROLLED OFF or DEFERRED generations ??? |

The gdg was created with No - scratch option
I tried using LISTCAT LEVEL(A.B.C) ALL in instream for IDCAMS. The job listed only active versions. Please tell me what do you mean by Rolled-off or Deffereed. |

Hi,
I would have expected the dataset to be rolled off but still cataloged if NOSCRATCH was used when defining it, but not accessible via (-3) but the full dataset name. a.b.c.G0001V00

Yes i am able to see ROLLED OFF
On seeing the sysprint of the job which was submitted using the card LISTCAT LEVEL(A.B.C) ALL.
It is showing "STATUS--------ROLLED-OFF" for Inactive versions.
What does it mean. |

Hi,
it means it's no longer part of the GDG.

Do you not have access to any manuals to see for yourself ?
If you do not know which volser it is on, then you may need to run DCOLLECT (IDCAMS manual) to find out the volser it lives on and then delete the NVR (IDCAMS manual) |

Hi,
the dataset must be cataloged as he's able to see it has rolled off with the listcat command.

True, I was only speculating on the possibility that it was uncatalogued and offering forward advice.
At NO extra charge |

I saw DOLLECT OPTION.
It uses several other options like
BACKUPDATA
CAPPLANDATA
MIGRATEDATA
MIGRSNAPERR
which do not relate to get information of inactive gdg.
Is there any option really available for it |

when on disk, without any catalog info attaching a GDG dataset is just a plain dataset with a funny looking name
Look at the ismf reporting facilities to get the list
or a generic dcollect to get a datset list and process it afterwards
It would also be a good thing to have a brainstorming with storage support
in order to get a better grasp on GDG management |
