Please tell me about the operations in a z/OS v3.1 environment data center.
Background:
To reduce operational costs, we plan to change the outsourced operations vendor.
The candidate vendor has very low mainframe operational skills.
They have no experience operating via the TSO panel but say they can manage console commands.
Also, since z/OS and foundational software such as NetView and SA are outsourced, they do not want to modify the operational infrastructure as it would incur additional costs.
Questions:
Is there a way to check confirmation messages after entering commands on the operator console once the messages have already scrolled past?
We prefer as simple an operation as possible, assuming SDSF is not available.
Also, since NetView NCCF (BR NETLOG) filters messages through automation tables, not all messages are guaranteed to be captured.
Since this is a conservatively configured system, z/OSMF and SSH cannot be used.
For example, if a command is entered during a time when many messages are rapidly scrolling and the response messages have already scrolled past, we want to check the SYSLOG without using SDSF.
About 25 years ago, there was a console printer called the 6262, and we used to check the messages on paper.
In Hitachi’s VOS3 mainframe, there was a command called “DL (Display Log),” which allowed searching messages that had already scrolled past on the operator console, displaying them in Area A.
Thank you!(^O^)/ |

"The candidate vendor has very low mainframe operational skills" sound to me like a disaster waiting to happen.
In my opinion you will need SDSF, or something like it, to view older messages. Even though you probably could write a log capture using the TSO CONSOLE command, it will be a lot of work, and you still need someone to maintain it. And I'm not sure that it could keep up with the message flow in a reasonable busy system. Though I might be wrong here.
Just my 2 cents. |

re: write a log capture using the TSO CONSOLE command
You can use the CONSOLE command to get into console mode then use the GETMSG() built-in rexx function. Specify to retrieve unsolicited messages. GETMSG will wait until a message is received. When a message is retrieved, it will put the information in a rexx stem variable. There is a slight chance that other messages will be issued before the next GETMSG instance during which I think you might miss capturing some messages. |

re: assuming SDSF is not available.
Can you elaborate on that? Logging in and using the SDSF LOG option will provide the capability to scroll to find what you are looking for. Is SDSF not installed, or do you deem it to be too complex for your operators to use?
Assuming the later, another option is to use SDSF rexx interface (or maybe to use SDSF batch interface) to retrieve the system log information. That is, the operator does not have to login and be familiar with the ISPF SDSF application. You would need to write a program to use these other SDSF functions but then you could archive it to a file and then maybe use a simpler interface (or automation) to examine it. |

Thank you, everyone.
Thanks to your support, we have reached an agreement with the operations vendor to enable the use of TSO & SDSF through training.
Initially, the assumption that SDSF could not be used seemed to stem from a fear of the unknown, as they had never operated TSO before.
We plan to alleviate this fear by showing actual screens on Hercules and letting them interact with it. |

Sorry to bother you with an unrelated question, but...
If you happen to know, could you please tell me how to connect to the master console of Hercules tk5- by x3270?
\mvs-tk5\conf
tk5.cnf
| Code: |
#
# consoles
#
INCLUDE conf/${TK5CONS:=intcons}.cnf |
[/code]
intcons.cnf
| Code: |
#
# console definition for use with
# MVS 3.8j TK4- unattended operations.

I found out that the connection to device address 009 is made by specifying the logical unit in Personal Communications.
I tried "V 009,ONLINE," but that didn’t seem to be correct.
For now, please forget about this matter.
If needed, I will start a separate thread. Thank you.(^o^)/
| Code: |
HHC02915I client 4 COMM: Connection received
HHC01030I Connection rejected, device 0009 unavailable
HHC00013I '/' input entered for console 0:0009: "V 009,ONLINE"
V 009,ONLINE
/ 4.42.58 IEE313I 009 UNIT REF INVALID |

It looks like you have an 'O' in that command rather than the two 0's? Unless I need to clean mmy glasses! :-) |

Thank you.
I didn't confuse "o" with "0," but still couldn't connect.
I will start a new thread, so please take care of it.
