Hello Everyone in Mainframe Land,
Our z / vm 6.3 has dropped for unknown reasons and will not start with ipl.
When we ipl it, it drops again after about 20 minutes and the following error is displayed in hmc:
hcpwrp9026w system failure prg004 occured during system initialization.
This is a very general message and I could not understand why. There is also no hardware error. Please let me know if you have any ideas! icon_neutral.gif

Sounds like you need to take a Stand Alone Dump or VMDUMP and analyse that using the dump tool if you have it:
www.ibm.com/docs/en/zvm/7.2?topic=s2apad-step-2-checking-symptom-record-vm-dump-tool

Looking around there is this one suggestion:

knowledge.broadcom.com/external/article/12419/receiving-a-prg004-after-starting-vmsecu.html

Ensure you used the correct version of CP text deck to generate the CP nucleus.

A PRG004 abend is usually caused by using a mismatch of CP text deck to build the CP nucleus.

You can use the CP NUC map verify what you have loaded.

thank you Pete but we did not see any change in z/vm before it dropped suddenly. Could this be a problem with the spool filling? How can I empty the spool? I tried to make changes with sysg but failed.

Just to be clear, the zVM actually IPL's, but after some time just drops suddenly?

There seems to be mention of a particular disk filling up beyond a 90% threshold which causes a shutdown, but I don't fully understand it. If you Google zvm DVHRLY3895T you'll see a lot about that.

There's a discussion about displaying and clearing SPOOL here with references to other manuals as well:

z/vm is down and drops after a few minutes when I load it(Even the initial z/vm load messages, such as requests for load type, such as drain, cold, etc., are not even displayed). It does not give any hardware error and only PROG04 error appears in the operation system message in HMC.

I have seen this post before. But this post is for clearing the spool when z/vm is up and running, not before.

I have attached the received messages to you.[/quote]

It might help to includes messages prior to the failure, although I have no experience of VM...it just helps to have the full picture.

This seems to be the earliest messages based on the time stamps in your examples. It may help to specify a dump unit.

13:34:34 HCPDMP908I SYSTEM FAILURE ON CPU 0000 CODE - PRG004
HCPDM9250E SYSTEM DUMP FAILURE: NO DUMP UNIT - INSUFFICIENT SPOOL SPACE
