Given that we're talking about the mainframe and I suppose quite a few of us have things to add to discussion rather than asking new questions, I'd prefer someone add on to an old thread. Seems much easier to me to find things in one, long, old thread than piece together half a dozen threads that were created simply to 'not add to an old thread'.
I understand it if you're asking a question, but I should think we'd want some greenbeard's update to an old topic if had something to add to the discussion.
Are we expecting them to create a new topic to add some insight that might have been on the old thread and then point to the old thread?
Just pulling a topic out of the air, 'SYMNAMES'. They been around for 10 or so years. I think it would be rather useful if someone had something to add to an old discussion on symnames, it would be rather welcome.
I know. There are lots of things I don't understand and have to live with. This is just another one. |

This is one of the Board Rules to follow by every member. They created for a reason and if you wish to learn more about why then Probably Admin can help you out.
Replying to older post doesn’t help the original poster as the problem must have been solved by now. So you if you want to add anything to old post or have a question then what is the harm in starting the new post and referring any older post in it ?
One of the problem I know is most of the times people mix up many issues in one post thinking it’s the same or related or continuation of the old post and the topic tolls over multiple pages and if anyone in future wants to read it then it’s confusion.
Second, I don’t know the frequency how often the topics are archived or deleted or is it even checking for any activity before taking any action.
So for now let us follow the rules as stated , we could always have some exceptions to this.
I can unlock your earlier post for now but please start a new topic going forward. |

I wasn't really asking for a rule change and don't expect one. That's why I posted it here. Just noting that for me, I prefer when long discussions are continued. In the discussions I keep, I add to old ones on purpose
Was just noting that it seems like a strange rule to me.
But you're right. The intent isn't to help the original poster as much as it is to help those who might stumble upon the thread when researching a solution for their problem.
