Hello Members,
First of all, I am sorry for my last post! I am still learning the community rules. I am not in the business of harvesting personal info (I don't work for marketing or sales ).
I am a User Experience Researcher. All I am trying to is to learn from you all to make our products better. I don't know anything, you all are the experts in this domain; therefore, reached out for help.
All I need is information, not personal details so let correct my mistake. I will appreciate your help!
I am researching ways to improve Mainframe dump analysis. As part of the research, I am considering how to accelerate troubleshooting, increase the productivity of junior developers, and decrease the demand on senior developers when it comes to dump analysis.
I may be totally wrong so please answer the following questions to help me formulate the hypothesis:
Which tools do you use for SVC dump analysis?
How many people in your organization analyze SVC dumps?
How much time do you spend analyzing SVC dumps?
How much time does it take for a novice to be effective at dump analysis?
How can dump analysis be improved? For Example: What features do you need? What would make analysis easier? What could be automated?
Thanks for your time! If you are interested in further discussion, please send me a message. |

- Dump analysis tools? - IPCS
- How many people analyze SVC dumps - MYOB
- How much time do you spend analyzing SVC dumps - Very little. Discuss this matter with your colleagues in what used to be known as CA Technologies
- How much time does it take a novice to be effective analyzing SVC dumps - As before, talk to your colleagues. IMO it requires moderately deep understanding of MVS internals, and the amount of time that requires depends very much on the individual.
- How to improve dump analysis? It depends on the individual. One thing I always missed in IPCS is it seems too difficult to extract the storage protect key for a block of storage. Back in the days when I did a lot of work with SVC dumps I knew how to do this, but it has been more than 10 years since that was important to me and I no longer can do this. Another IPCS task that might be automated is to drill down to the failing TCB and RB rather than analyzing this by hand. Granted an experienced user can do this quite quickly, but it could be more automated. This is probably something IBM should be doing, not an ISV.
