SAS - RETAIN statement

Hi,

I have a SAS statement like the one below.

RETAIN a b ' ';

RETAIN will retain the values of the variable as it reads through multiple observations.

But what is the meaning of ' ' near b? Could anyone be kind enough to explain?

I went through manuals and learnt that it is initializing b to ' '.

Am i correct?
