I have been asked to do some research on the feasability of porting a selected application to run in a/the cloud. The current thought is to pay for time with a cloud service provider rather than trying to support our own (for both technology and organizational issues).

Has anyone had any experience running an existing mainframe application (vsam/db2/cobol) on a cloud?

As this only popped up yesterday, i do not yet know what i don't know . . . icon_wink.gif

The reason for considering this is to try to reduce mainframe "costs" for this particular application. These costs are what the current service bureau charges and one thought is renting time/space elsewhere might be cost effective.

I have reservations about the logistics as well as the cost, but . . .

Thanks,

d

Hi Dick Scherrer,
You have found any thing on this topic!
Even I have a requirement to port a selected application to run in the cloud or atleast use to retrieve data from cloud and process in mainframe.

So for NO Luck, No one has any clue on it.

Hi K,

I've spoken with a few "cloud vendors" and what my client wants to do is more "remote hosting" rather than putting the application(s) in the cloud. Yup, there is a difference, but i do not believe i know enough to describe it. I believe i understand what they have said, but it is not crystal clear to me yet.

What does "run in the cloud" mean to you?

One thing i found out is that there woukld be a need to obtain a new license for each product used by the application (i.e. file-aid, Easytrieve, etc). This alone may be cost justification not to proceed.

It is not as simple as "tossing it over the fence". . .

Good Luck and i'd be interested to see any followup info you learn.
