Hi All,
We are facing a problem while sorting a file of length 119 with 1.3 billion records in it. The job was running for more than 12 hours, Please find the sort card we used for sorting the records below
Code:
SORT FIELDS=(81,4,BI,A)
In the input file field Starting from 81 is a COMP variable of length 4 bytes.
To our surprise we ran a file of length 112 bytes record format FB with the same sort card ran in 20 minutes which also contains 1.2 billion.
The extra 7 bytes which were added are alpha numeric flags to the old file.
Is there any possibility that sort is taking time due to data problem in the extra bytes.

Did you look at how much CPU actually job is taking? Is also taking loger CPU time?

The job took almost 1 minute 50 sec CPU time after running for 15 hrs, We cancelled the job.
We gave Blocksize as Zero for the output file.

What is the blocksize of the Input file?
When I see a CPU / wall clock ratio like this it usually mans that the job is spending a lot of time waiting for I/O.

Hello,
On which media is the input file stored? If this file is stored on some kind of "tape" and only one drive is allocated to the process, much/most of the time may be waiting on tape mounts, rewind, dismounts. And if done manually (as opposed to using a robot) the lost time gets worse.

The input file was residing on tape, But the same sort was taking just only 20 minutes to run with input record count equals to 1.2 billion before changing the file length from 112 bytes to 119 bytes. The extra 7 bytes were 1 byte alphanumeric fields we added to the old file.

Ah. S222'd.
We do need the JCL. You are not releasing tapes once read. Thus you have a drive for each volume. If this runs alongside heavy tape users, there is likely going to be contention for drives. If no free drive, your job will just sit.
Have you got the output from the one which completed after X hours. That would be more useful than this.

Wait a minute. According to the WER054I message, the successful run processed only 132,512,470 records, which is nowhere near 1.2 Billion.
Also note that the EXCP counts for the failed job are many orders of magnitude greater than the successful one. I will ask one more time: what is the blocking factor of the input file used in the unsuccessful run?

Hi,
the 2 jobs you have shown are not sorting the same number of files.
The successful sort job is only sorting 132 million records and not 1.2 billion records as you stated.
The successful sort job has only 1 tape/cart as input(1 file) , the unsuccessful run has 40 tapes as input (10 files concatenated).

at first glance if You know that the sort is big why allocate the SORTWK files
with such ridiculous space allotment
might not be the main reason but since You are trying to tune a process
why not allocate a bit larger without any secondary allocations
unless overridden by some ACS constructs Your each workfile as defined will just use
100 + 15 * 20 ==> 400 CYLINDERS
bit small allocations uhu???

The TS led us to believe that the only thing that had changed between the runs was the LRECL of the input file.

They are even run in a different Class.
The completed job is using MAXSORT, hence the multiple output which are later merged. No sign that the second job is doing that.
