Hi,

I am currently working as developer in mainframe CICS COBOL. I am looking for change into good technology to get more package (ex: SAP, JAVA etc) . I heard IMS/DB is the best one for that.. Please give me some overview about future scope of mainframe.

Thanks in advance.

It depends where you're working and how much they let you learn about other technologies outside your working area. Typically people are quite pidgeon-holed into their specialist areas these days unfortunately.

Mainframe supports the technologies you mention and more, but there is a huge variation in what different mainframe sites are exploiting.

Gartner often look to what technologies are going to become important in future so worth looking at their website.

Hello,

You mention CICS and COBOL. How is the data you work with stored (VSAM, some kind of database, etc).

If you plan on growing in the cics/cobol area of the mainframe, learning your organization's database environment would be a good long-term investment (unless they have committed to Not using database and then i'd look for an organization where i could learn on-thr-job). Fewer and fewer mainframes have no database system . . .

Hello,

Does you organization run neither db2 nor ims nor any other database management software?

Do they intend to stay cobol/vsam forever? I've been many places that still have a lot of older cobol/vsam applications, but most new development is with a database.

There is still a Lot of cobol/vsam working gong on, but i believe your opportunities will increase if you learn db2 (either at your current company or some other).

Hello,

Early on more $ is attractive. Considering that you will do "something" for the next 20 or 30 years, make sure it is something you really enjoy.

In places i've been lately, google and microsoft are hiring lots of new talent as they are growing. The starting salaries are better than many other entry level jobs.

The people i consider my peer group (mainframe or other platforms) pretty much all earn more than the new people at google and microsoft. But we are not entry level.

If you become really good at something (this takes years, not weeks), you can expect to do well.
