Hi,

I am trying to find a way to get the count of segments under each root in a DB without reading all the segments thru GNP. Does anybody know how can we do this?

need to get the key for each root along with count of child segments under that

If I recall correctly, segment counts are produced by the reorg utility. Ask your DBA. Unload should also provide counts, depending on which product you have available.

1. By just COBOL as your only weapon, I doubt if there is a way round, GNP, GN is the way to go.

2. If you just want to know the total number of segments, get a copy of the 'analyse report' from your SysProgs. The analyser should be run by systems programmers on a regular basis.

3. This link talk about Segment Count Summary report but I've not worked with it, so you need to do a bit of labor.

4. And at another shop, with BMC utility one could get all segment counts. But that's not availble at this shop and I do not really recall what was it. In other words, if you've BMS utilities for IMS available at your shop, you may try your luck with them too.
