Restore from a tape back up you've made of the file -- you DO make back ups of critical files, right? |

Yes backup's will be automatically taken.
Some of the datasets which are not used often will automatically get deleted, in such case I will issue in HRECOVER 'dataset' and recover it, but the problem now I am facing says the backup copy doesn't exist. |

Let me clarify -- you ARE taking DF/DSS (or other backup tool) back ups of these files -- not just relying on HSM for your back ups? If you do not have an independent non-HSM back up of the file, you may have lost it forever. |

Depending on the management class of any dataset, the backup strategy is defined. Number of backups retained, number of backups retained when the original dataset is deleted, and how long to keep the "while deleted" backup version(s).
You need to go talk to your storage management people to find out
a) Was the PDS backed up automatically
b) When the original dataset was deleted
c) If they existed, have any backups since been expired.
d) Do full volume dumps still exist for the volume where the dataset resided.
e) Can these dumps be used as input to a selected dataset restore. If not, it can be easily changed to allow this. |

You use the term "hrecover" without knowing what an HSM back up is? Perhaps some time in the manuals would be helpful. |

Hello,
Does your system periodically create full-volume backups of all of the dasd? If yes, the dataset may be available on one of these full-volume backups.
Suggest you speak with the storage management people. . . |
