WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FILE AID AND 3.4.WHAT IS THE MAIN ADVANTAGE OF FILEAID THAN 3.4?

There are a lot.....You can't compare File Aid to 3.4 Only......

For me it has been .....Editing Dataset having large number of records.... which is get substituted by Browse in case of 3.4.....

You could say that file-aid is the expanded version of 3.4 option.In file-aid we have many other options like
1) Selecting only specific records satisfying certain conditions.
2)Drop unwanted records not requires in the dataset.
3)you can compare files of different organizations suppored by file-aid.
4)It helps updates the records after modfication
There are many more functions apart from the ones mentioned above.
Just have look at the functions in the file-aid manual present in this forum |

One more to add to the above ...
In file aid you can view the file along with the layout.Its possible to view integer values for computational variables. |

Maybe the interviwer was expecting some answer like " VSAM files can be viewed thru Fileaid and not by 3.4".
I wud've rather said they are 'not related' at all!!!! ;-) |

How is it even possible to compare the 3.4 option of ISPF with File-Aid? Agreed, they can both be used to manipulate data, but that's where the similarity ends.
For the uninitiated:
ISPF 3.4 option is a dataset list utility, from where datasets can be browsed, viewed or edited.
File-Aid is a vendor program. It's not an in-built utility within the OS/390 or z/OS or whatever legacy O/S you use. It may or may not be available at a site.
Advantage of File-Aid over manipulating data from the DSLIST are:
1. Direct Access files or VSAM files may be manipulated using File-Aid whereas DSLIST cannot handle them (without the help of other utils).
2. File-Aid may be used to create subsets of files, for viewing or editing, using conditions, which is not possible from the DSLIST panel.
3. File-Aid allows data to be viewed in formatted layouts, which is not possible from 3.4. Although this is more convenient for COBOL than Assembler copybooks
There are too many differences to list here.
