Hello,
Basically the same as IMS or DB2 or Datacom or etc DBA.
The names of the tools and terminology are product specific, but the actual work is quite similar. |

Hello,
Suggest you talk with the senior dba(s) who support your system.
What you will actually do is quite site-specific. What you do will depend on what activities are currently going on and what parts of this activity will be your responsibility. Depending on whether there is new development, some major enhancement to an existing system, or routine maintenance going on, what you do will be determined. Again, site-specific.
Do you have experience with the tables and programs that you are now going to support? If not, becoming familiar with the structure and content of the tables would be good as well as the key processes (the ones most important to the users and/or the ones that use the most system resources). |

Hi,
It is same as other DBA do. Our DBA will do the following things
1. Regular resizing of areas also called of Database Expansion
2. Resizing and rebuilding of indexes
3. Adding new journals
4. Defining new Schemas and subschemas
5. Monitoring backup and restore activities (Preparing batch jobs for the same)
6. DBA is responsible for recycle of IDMS. (Shutdown and startup)
7. DBA has to answer all Database related queries.
DBA has to do a lot more than this. These are basic activities every one do.
Thanks,
Reddy |

Thanks for the information.
I am new to this IDMS DBA.
My question is whether SYSTEM DBA is different from the IDMS DBA.
Thanks

Hello,
What does the term "system dba" mean in your organization? It may have some special meaning in your organization, but it is not an industry "standard" term.
You organization may differentiate between those who install the product and upgrades/fixes from the vendor from those who support the application developers directly. One of the organizations i've supported has people in the "system programmer" group that does product installation and production database support while each major project has dbas that work with the logical and physical models and support the developers.
Some of the organizations i've supported do everything with one or 2 dbas that are responsible for everything used by "their" database environment.
Someone in your organization can best tell you how your environment is organized. |
