Hi All,
What are the ways of preventing datasets (PS files, PDSs and VSAM) from archiving ?
And which one is the best amongst them ?

in an SMS environment
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/storage/software/sms/whatis_sms/const.html
Data set archiving/migration is ruled by the management class of the dataset,
In order to give the appropriate management class tho the dataset You want to exclude from archiving/migration
You should speak with Your storage support group, or look at Your shop standards
there is no ... them, that' s the only way |

I currently consult for a company whose mainframe (managed by yet another company - owning company) archive process is based on last date of access. > 14 days, archive it................
so, I wrote a rexx that accesses any ds (pds or po) that I own. I run this rexx every friday (or thursday) evening. Simply reads a record, or opens a member. This effectivly discourages the archive process set-up by the idiots on the other end. |

Hi Dick,
This is someting I wanted. I too have a JCL that simply searches a string in a PDS or file. Now, my question is, merely searching a string in a PDS will prevent it from Archiving ?
Also could you please give the REXX, you wrote ?

depends upon the criteria of the archiving agent. mostly, simple access will deter the achiving of a ds.

Nothing wrong in reviewing with storage support
...the migrate thresholds
...the datasets eligible/not eligible for migration
but playing dirty tricks to prevent dataset migration... bah! |

Yeah, I'm with Enrico here, being a storage person.
I can also see Dicks point about things disappearing too quickly. And Yes there are some idiots out there who should not be allowed to touch SMS unsupervised. ( In fact, I'm not sure that I would even allow them to logon in the first place !!! ).
I usually allow 32 days for TSO datasets before they are migrated, and always to ML1 for fast recall for another 45 or so days.
So, if the SMS setup is well thought out and implemented, you shouldn't have these problems, so YES also speak to your storage people to see what they can do for you so that you do not need to circumvent the rules. |

Well,
I use TPS370 command in front of the DSN to alter the mangement class to 370 days. I doubt that it's a common command across shops, still You can give a try.
BTW, keep the Expat's comments in mind, there are some better suggestion then the above one. |
