What is the essential difference between a cataloged and instream procedure?

Cataloged Procedures can be called by any programs while Instream can only be used by where they have written.

addition info on instream and cataloge procedures:

max of 15 instream proceedures are allowed.
all instream procedures should start with PROC and end with PEND


no need to code PEND for cataloged proceedures
