Hi Venkatarao,

1. We can update ESDS records, but we cannot delete.

2. Donno.

3. B clear with the question.

4. For fixed length records it should b same i.e. (80, 80), if they both differ it would be variable length record.

Thank You,

Bramhananda Reddy. K.

Hi,

Regarding the second Question, VSAM Files can be stored on the Tape, and they can be retrived easily too.

I have accessed VSAm Files stored on TAPE through FILE AID.

Do let me know in case you have queries on that.

Regards,
Vidya

Hi Vidya,
As you have mentioned in your post that VSAM files can be stored on tape. Can you please elaborate more on the same.
I am asking this as random access is not possible on tapes. Tapes can be
read only sequentially.

Please explain when do we store VSAM files on tapes. Also let me know when you accessed VSAM files on tape using FILEAID what acces mode you used.

Let me know in case of any concerns.

David.

Hi David,

VSAM Data Sets are moved to the TAPE for storage, to free the space on the DISC. So, if the VSAM Dataset is not used for long, they get migrated to the TAPE and are stored there.

When ever there is a need to access them we usually recall them back to the DISC From the TAPE and Access them.

As you said you can access the files sequentially from the TAPE Without Recalling them to the DISC, though i have not done it myself.

To access VSAM Data sets go to TSo-> PM -> T -> Tape Management System and then you can give the Dataset name to access.

Do let me know u r concerns,

Regards,

Vidya
