Although there are similar posts before that, i am still having some queries and so asking this question.
I need mainframe access in my Laptop.I heard that Hercules (simulator or emulator) is good one. I went to the site but confused how to download. Moreover whether i need to download JCL,VSAM,DB2 ,COBOL seperately after hercules download.

Hello,
The Hercules site has all of the information needed to run the mainframe emulator on your pc. The Operating System many/most people use is an older release of MVS not z/OS.

The download is (or was) rather straightforward.
Suggest you spend a lot of time reviewing the material on the Hercules site and looking at their questions & answers. |

As Dick mentioned, Hercules is only permitted to run an old version of MVS that is in the public domain. From what I have heard, IBM is dead set against allowing z/OS on Hercules.
Also remember that Enterprise Cobol, DB2, CICS, IMS, etc are separately licensed products so you cannot legally run them on Hercules without writing a large cheque to IBM. Assuming they even agree to let you, which is very unlikely.
IMO, in light of the legal restrictions, Hercules is best suited to hard core systems programmers, not application developers
IBM offers a product called "RDZ Unit Test" that permits you to run on your laptop a complete modern mainframe environment that includes everything a programmer needs to develop applications: IMS, CICS, DB2, Cobol etc) The bad news is that it is *not* free. It's on my wish list, but I am not expecting to see it any time soon. |

Hello,
Curiousity got the better of me, so i went and did a little looking. . .
www-112.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/buyingtools/paexpress/Express?P0=E1&part_number=D54NBLL,D54N4LL,D54SDLL,D59WALL,D59WCLL,D54SDLL,D0BHXLL,D0BHYLL,D0BHZLL,D0DJULL,D0DJWLL,D0DJZLL,D0DK1LL,D59VSLL,D54LILL,D59V7LL,D54LALL,D54S7LL,D0BI2LL,D0BI0LL,D0BI1LL&catalogLocale=en_US&locale=en_US&country=USA&PT=html
I didn't look into how many of these one might need to get to be fully operational. . . While there is not a single $20k item, there are many "things" that are quite expensive. . . |
