I was asked to create a report. For example using ICN Number. Which tool do I need to use. Is it FileAid?
Thank You,
Ajay |

Hello Ajay and welcome to the forums,
You need to provide much more info for anyone to be able to help you.
ICN is your term - not necessarily known to most people here.
We cannot tell you which tool to use. We can tell you that excel spreadsheets are not created on the mainframe. You can create a file that could be loaded into a spreadsheet, but spreadsheet files are not created from typical applicatioin programs.
Why might you think of creating a report with fileaid or ftp?
I believe you need to get much better direction from whoever "asked you to create a report".
Also, please do not post the same question multiple times - the other post has been deleted. |

Hi,
Can you please let me know what are the genuine questions that i would need to ask? Because it is in production region i am afraid that i might mess-up something.
The following is the scenario
I work in a healthcare project and ICN Number is Internal Control Number which is the number used to uniquely identify the claim. Now using this number i have create a report for all the possible ICN Numbers.
Sorry about positing in multiple place, because i was not sure which tool to use i thought it might be helpful.
Thank You
Ajay |

what is the standard tool to write reports in Your organization ?
the software to be used depends on the complexity of the report...
just a list of possible softwares which could be used
sort ( DFSORT/SYNCSORT and relative add on tools)
FILEAID ( You quoted it but I do not know anything about its reporting capabilities )
EASYTRIEVE
SAS
a user program ( COBOL, PL/I )
Your question is really too generic to receive a good answer
why not ask somebody of Your team for the details of your environment
and the common practices for such a task ? |

It is good to be careful of the production environment, but it should not be that fragile. Adding a report should not mess things up - and testing should be done in a test environment . . .

Not to worry - you didn't know and now you do. Something that would be a good thing to do is to read the forum rules (it is mentoned there). Once your requirement "stabilizes" we can move your topic to a more appropriate section of the forum.

I suspect that more than just this number is needed on the new report. So, first you need to get direction on which information should be on the report, the sequence of the report (unless it is simply a list in ICN sequence), and which (if any) totals are needed.
Where is the data stored? Tape, sequential dasd, vsam, some database? This may influence the choice of reporting tool used.
Most organizations have one or only a few standard production reporting tools. If this is the case, you need to pick one that is acceptable to your organization for promotion to production.
Knowing the source of the data, the report requirements, and the rules of your organization will help pick a reporting tool.
If your new report is being created for loading into a spreadsheet, you may not want a report at all, but rather a delimited file that can be easily downloaded for use with spreadsheet software. |

Hi,
The source of the data is VSAM Files.
Thank You,

Ok. With luck the needed data will be pulled from a single vsam file rather than joining multiple files. Someone there needs to define which file(s) each field is to be retrieved from.
Which tool(s) should be used to process against a vsam file on your system? Only someone in your organization can answer this (we don't know your environment or rules).
You need to also determine if you are going to create a "report" or a file suitable for downloading or both. Again, this decision must come from within your organization.
Once you and your group have defined the requirement, we may be able to provide implementation suggestions. From the very little you have provided, we cannot help with the requirement definition (we don't usually deal with the requirement definition, but rather with ways to deliver the requirement or help with technical questions).
Keep in mind that your topic so far has been like someone asking "Which is the best way to get to the store?". Well, which store or even which kind of store, in which city/country? Are you walking, driving, taking a bus or using some other transportation? Without better info, no good answer is possible. |

Hi,
Pehaps if you'll analyse some reporting-program at your shop, that would guide you better, at least can provide you a base. What 's the final report expected, is that known to you ..the information provided so far is too little to suggest something via a forum. |
