Hi,

I have been told that using ICEMAN in a step will use point logic and hence uses single volume. Is there a similar step that i can use to make it multi volume instead?
THanks.

PGM=ICEMAN invokes the sort product at your site - DFSORT (ICE messages), Syncsort (WER message) or CA-SORT (CAS messages) - which one are you using?

I don't know what you mean by "point logic". Which data set are you asking about in terms of single volume or mult-volume - input (SORTIN), output (SORTOUT) or work (SORTWKdd)?

Thanks for that. DFSORT (ICE messages) I Think.
Was thinking of SORTOUT dataset
Im not too knowledgeable on this area, i just know that we are having a lot of space issues in our JCL's so we were having to decrease a lot of the primary storage, however for a step that uses ICEMAN apparently this will use point logic - which makes the sort quicker but does limit you to primary storage and hence in these situations we need to increase, i just wondered if there was an alternative so as multivolume could be used?
Im struggling with the whole space allocation thing. Do you know a good explanation on line about tracks/cylinders etc How many tracks in a cylinder etc.
Thanks.

You're confusing a whole lot of things here.

DFSORT supports multivolume SORTOUT output. I don't know why you think it doesn't.

Again, I don't know what you mean by "point logic".

It sounds like you're space constrained. I don't know how to tell you what to do about that based on your posts. Prehaps you should open a problem report (PMR) with IBM service so they can collect the needed doc and help you figure out what to do.
