I think TS may have left in a huff. Unlike Ed he was unable to adequately describe the situation, and assumed that rather than it being something lacking in his explanation, we did all that typing just to have fun with him.
Oh, well. For anyone else who wants to put some text from a dataset into the body of an e-mail, you at least get something from the thread. If you have some requirement to put data into the body of an-email, forget it, do it as an attachment. |

Hello,
TS came to the party knowing how the "thing" should be done, and was not willing to consider that this was not necessarily a good solution. Indeed, we still don't know just what this "file" contains.
Also, getting the file into the body of the e-mail may have been "the requirement". . . Amazing the number of "things" that are declared a requirement - as though this would make a questionable process become acceptable. |

Hello All,
I dont know what does TS means here .... Anyways I am not here to discuss about that .
This is what I meant when i was talking about my requirment :
Requirement : I needed to send the content of the dataset , which was output of a job which displays the no. of standing transaction( in my case we call them a triggers ) .. So the monitoring job will send an alert MAIL that these many triggers need to be processed before the deadline time..
My method : This is what I did
Code: |
//*********************************************************************
//* STEP0001 - EMAIL STEP *
//*********************************************************************
//STEPCP4 EXEC PGM=IEBGENER
//SYSIN DD DUMMY
//SYSUT2 DD SYSOUT=(B,SMTP)
//SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSPRINT DD SYSOUT=*
//SYSUT1 DD DSN=ABCD.MAIL,DISP=SHR
// DD DSN=ABCD.MONITOR.DATA,DISP=SHR
//*
|
ABCD.MONITOR.DATA is the dataset which contains the output. |

It was just my idea to check if we can send the content of the dataset in the mail body instead of the attachment .. |

re: attachment vs. email body debate
I think it depends on the content of the message as to whether I would want it as an attachment or not. Based on the usage described, it seems to me that the receiver of the email would get a simple message somewhat like:
Quote: |
Job BILLING(J1245) ended with RC=16. |
In that situation, I would prefer to get the email only rather than to have to perform a second manual process to see the short message in an attachment. |
Ditto |

Hello,
TS means Topic Starter
Again, depending on exactly what is the file content another option might be considered. If the info is as Pedro showed, we don't even make the user look at the email. We put this small amount into the Subject and they have the info without even opening an e-mail. It is visable in the Inbox list.
Anyway - good to hear you have something that does what you want - thank you for letting us know |

And the solution posted is the same as that suggested by Bill at the top of page 2. |
