1st one I saw was an NCR 304 at Camp Pendleton, CA in 1965. They now have a tendency to be geographically separated from the programmers. |

I have seen the mainframe for the first time in Aug, 2006 at Center for Development of Advanced Computing, Thiruvananthapuram, India.
It was an IBM S/390 machine. There was a mid range machine too... a H-50.
The S/390 was an awesome machine. It was a pleasure working with that. Now, I have moved from there and, hardly get any chance to see the mainframe.
I suggest everyone ... never miss a chance to look at the mainframe... atleast once... you'll feel the difference.

Nice pics. I liked the mainframes that had lots of multi-colored lights flashing in front! |

Saw two IBM 360's (a model 67, other unknown) ... love the dials, switches, blinking lights and keyboard! Almost got the front panel when one was being scrapped!
Saw an Amdahl 470 V6.
Saw an IBM 4341 & I thinks a 4381 ... nice book shelves! |

Hello
When I started as a programmer the computer room was accessible to programmers you could pick up yor reports, request tape mounts and have card decks executed. In most computer rooms there was also a keypunch machine for fixing bad job cards and such. |

Hello Mr Lloyd (sr) and welcome to the forum,
If you look around, you may spot more than just a few others who started on cards too

I did get a peek at the z9 while at the client data center... the operator (or data center manager, who knows?) shooed me off before I could get a good look. So have I seen it? yes. really? well.... |
