can anyone plz tell me what is the difference between giving a
DISP=(NEW,PASS) in a temparory DS and a permanent one.
will the permanent one be created on the device before passing it and stay uncataloged after the job?

Hi Sonu,

The funda for Temp and Perm dataset is

Temp dataste is use if teh dataset is used in that job only
Perm dataset is used if dataset may refer in another job and may refer after some days.

Teh temp dataset is basically used for space constrain.

Hope it is clear..

Regards
Rupesh

Hi rupesh,
my concern is like .. if i give DISP=(new ,pass) for permanent DS is almost acts like a temp one...in this case will the data set be available after the run.

Hi,
Irrespective of Temporary or Permanent Datasets, if the Disp position is supposed to be (,pass) it would be deleted at the end of that job.

We can give pass parameter, the dataset will be created and will not catlog after job finished.

Hope this helps

hi ,

We can give pass in both temp as well as permanent. only the thing is it will not get catalouged and will be deleted after the job is completed. It's used for space constraints and also to pass data on to the next step.

If anything wrong pls correct

thanks

Hi tarunflash,
u r wrong..we can use PASS for creating..
prakash kathiresan is absolutely rite... i was wondering y we need these two kind of approch like (NEW,PASS) in temp as well as perm' if both acts the same way. both the DS willnot be available after the run .but will the data set be physically written and deleted if i use permanent..that was my concern.

hi sonu,

i think that if u code (,pass) it will create a temp dataset,
(temp datasets are like scrach pads,we can use it for steps)

omit the DSN name,&DSN name,&&DSN name also create the temp datasets,

corrections welcome,

with regards,
