Before I answer about parentage and maintaining position I advise you to have look in the manual at this site publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/dzichelp/v2r2/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.ims.doc.jgr/javadoc/index-all.html and search (suchen) for 'command code' after pressing go (LOS). You will find all about command codes including U and P. If still 'lost' get back...

Hi Bitneuker

Thank you very much for the link..

Hi Priyesh

U command code also establishes parentage at the concerned level, then what exactly is the difference between U and P.

An example would be helpful..

Hi Ganesh,

Please take some time to read the document behind the link. It explains in detail, including examples, what P and U do. In the example with U you will notice the GN call issues unqualified SSA's for PATIENT and ILLNESS (parentage was established by the prior GU all with qualified SSA's). Normally the GN call would move positioning but the U command code prevents this. The GN call in the example will be satified until there's no TREATMNT segment found under this PATIENT/ILLNESS resulting in status code GE.

Cheers,
