Can use the same SORT statement for variable length recorord

Hi all,
Can we use the same SORT statement for variable length record
as we use for fixed length record(below)?

Ex:- SORT FIELDS=(1,10,A,CH)

If your record is variable you will need to add 4 to the starting position.
