Opening a file in EXTEND mode???

Hi folks,

I come across a COBOL statement where it says
Code:
OPEN EXTEND EMP-FILE


What this code does? I need a quick reply.

A file is opened in EXTEND mode, when you want to append the data in the file keeping present data safe.
