I am not sure I am in the proper forum so if I my question is better placed in another forum let me know. I have about 75 data sets residing on tape where my supervisor has indicated that the retention period assigned to these data sets will expire within 60 days and he would like the retention period extended. Can I do this with a utility or can this task best be performed by a systems person at our mainframe computing center? I know I will get a much quicker answer through this forum than through the helpdesk at the computer center. Here's hoping that the response is NOT "Call your computing center."

Actually, the answer will be to contact your site support group.
The answer depends upon whether or not your site is using a tape management system (and which one if so), as well as whether or not your site uses an automated tape library (and if so which one). These are not things that people on this forum will know since it depends upon your site. |

Also, the question of "Am I authorised to change retention periods".
I'm currently working at a site and had the same problem. I know it's CA1, I have the batch job to do it, but I'm not authorised to do it, so had to spend half a day filling out the appropriate forms |

You can explore use of TMSUPDTE program if you have access. I'd also suggest talking to your Tape Management people first though. The reason I (and all other (possibly)) suggest to speak to the storage/tape-management people is that usually the storage people can set a max retention and if an 'end-user' states a RETPD greater than that specified in the TMS defined maximum, the TMS value takes precedence and overrides the value supplied by 'end-user'. |
