Frank,
It might be useful to add a little description of what each example is doing to the TOC, now it's just a long list of "Example n", adding e.g. used keywords to each and adding index entries for them would make it a bit faster to find the example that you need.
In my case I needed a SEQNUM example and the first one is in Example 12 of OUTFIL. If the TOC had mentioned it, something like "Example 12 (SEQNUM)", or if there had been an index entry
Code: |
SEQNUM
Examples
Example 12
Example 19 |
it would have sped up the search...
There is by the way also an issue with INDEX entries pointing to the wrong page, try the very first O entry, "OCCUR operator (ICETOOL) 643" on DFSORT Application Programming Guide. For what it's worth, this seems to be a very common issue with many IBM manuals... |

If I use the PDF and "view sidepane" to look at the "Index (which is extended table-of-contents really) I can navigate to the examples in each section, then when I click on the example number, it takes me straight to the example in the normal viewing area. |

Robert,
That's a good suggestion. We'll look into it for a future update to the books.
Thanks. |

If you have the PDF version of the manual then there is a page near the beginning on How to send your comments to IBM. It gives a link to a web page. I used this recently to send comments to IBM about the size of the chapter on OUTFIL (it is over 170 pages long). They replied back. |

jerry,
FYI, those comments go to our writer who passes them off to Kolusu and me. I've provided all of the content for the DFSORT books for many, many years. |

back when i was just starting in this profession,
every thing was hardcopy,
and you had to scan each page manually.
and the manuals were not very big.
now-a-days with search/find in the pdf's (and online html)
does not matter if the book is 10,000,000 pages,
i can find what i want, quickly.
and i am thankful for the extended verbiage of any topic.
or maybe i am just used to 'key-word' searches, etc...
(i did not mean that in any negative way,
just meant that using the pcs'/mfs' searching capabilities
i find acceptable.)
anything beats wading thru a book manually, as far as i am concerned.
and since i am used to ibm manual 'protocol'
even new topics don't bother me,
nearly every manual is written the same way,
though the redbooks tend to vary in format. |
