How the JCL program gets the rundate

Please let me know how the program gets the rundate using this parameter. From where the rundate is obtained???

//QAFB EXEC QAF1,
// RUNDATE=$DDMMYY,
//* GDG1='+0',
// CENTURY=20

My guess is that the value for the variable $DDMMYY is supplied at runtime by your job scheduling system. It looks like a typical scheduler variable.
