Hi,
I work in a start up company and setting up Estimation Model for Mainframe projects. In Estimation first step is to classify a program/JCL to simple/ medium/complex criteria.
I wanted to know on how to quantify it ? for example says if number of lines is less than 10 than it is simple , greater than 10 and less than 20 it is medium and greater than 20 it is complex.
Is there any benchmarking figures that could be used to set the complexity of a cobol program , CICS Online program and JCL batch , Reporting program ?
Thanks

no, the first step is understand the consulting process
I am amazed by somebody wishing to start a high level company
and hiring people lacking the elementary skills
there are zillions of dissertations on how to classify IT complexities and the already in place common practices
but it is not our job to provide free consultanciy services to one of our competitors
would be quite stupid, wouldn' t it |

OK, then let's look a a JCl Member with totally 50 lines. About 45 lines are so called //* Cards. Sounds very complex !!!
Quantity or Quality ??? |

Hello,
I see no reason to classify jcl . . . It is what it is - a language to control jobs.
Let's talk about a job that runs 100 report/extract programs. The steps are nearly identical with the exception of the program to execute and the file(s) used for the process. So now there is a process with more than 1000 statements. With NO complexity. . .
I guess if the client can be convinced that this is difficult to accomplish, they deserve to pay extra. . .
