Hi,
I need to unzip the Unix files ending with .gz format and ftp them to mainframe. In Unix I use gunzip command but due to file size most of the times the command fails. So i wanted to know is there any option to unzip the .gz file present in Unix server and then ftp them to mainframe.
Thanks,

Hello,
You do realize that unzipping the files before the ftp will caus much more data to be transferred. . .

Is this because of insufficient space or some other reason? How were the original files build if there is insufficient space?

The files can be "unzipped" using the same product that compressed them.
So far this does not appear to be a mainframe issue? |

Yes this isn't a mainframe issue. But i dont want to run behind Unix developers each time i need to unzip files.
SO wanted to know options available in mainframe to either unzip and ftp or ftp and then unzip. |

Hello,
You need to talk with your system support people to learn which compression/decompression tools are available on the mainframe. There are multiple products and the selection from these are site-specific.
Personally, i'd look for a solution that ftp'ed the compressed data and decompressed it on the mainframe. |

You need to find out if the two products are compatible. I believe that .gz files are unique to UNIX. |

PKZIP can handle gzip (.gz) file de-compression.
According to the manual:
UNZIP processing in PKZIP will automatically detect the GZIP header and process it accordingly. |

It sounds like you need to work with your site support group to define a mount point with space to handle the gunzip on the mainframe. Gzip and gunzip are available for Unix System Services under z/OS so sending the compressed files and then expanding them would be the preferred approach. |
