we want to convert disks from 3390 Model-3 to 3390 Model-9. We're using the Blksize as defined in device 8392. Will this still be valid for new disks?

Does we have to reformat, etc?

These device numbers are unknown to me. Do you mean 3390 Model-3 and Model-9? Please give more information.

The track geometry on a MOD-3 and MOD-9 is exactly the same, there are just more tracks per volume. Use the same blocksizes as before.

Or are you saying you want to reconfigure an existing virtual storage array from MOD-3 to MOD-9 volume sizes?

PS. Is 8392 a blocksize or another device type?

I would just specify the RECFM and LRECL in the JCL and let the OS determine the optimum BLKSIZE.

I also recall that you can reblock datasets copying with DFdss.

Expat- you're right, DFDSS will automatically reblock datasets it moves if the reblock flag is on in their VTOC entry. Otherwise you can force it by specifying REBLOCK on the COPy command. There are some exceptions, and you might be a bit wary of doing it for PDS/PDSE's which sometimes have BLKSIZE restriction:

The REBLOCK keyword is ignored for:

o Unmovable data sets

o Data sets with record format of U (except for partitioned load
modules)

o Data sets with a record format of V, VS, VBS, or F

o Partitioned data sets with note lists (except for partitioned load
modules)

o Partitioned data sets that are also specified in the NOPACKING keyword

Suggest you move to using Dataclas more and eliminate as much DCB and SPACE coding from the JCL as you can so future migrations will be simplified.

If you have TDMF you can go from Mod-3's to Mod-9's without an outage, but you have to run REFVTOC on the new target volumes later to resize the VTOC's
