Hi everybody,
this is my first post to these forums and I am already looking forward to working together with you all.
Currently I have the problem that I need to expand a VTOC online, using REFORMAT EXTVTOC, but that volume's SYS1.VVDS-file is blocking the required space.
Until now I have searched through the net and the IBM Library, but I have not found any information on how to, or if it is even possible to, move a SYS1.VVDS to another space on the volume allowing me to expand the VTOC.
Thank you in advance,
Marc |

or DFSMS Managing Catalogs SC26-7409-05 is useful.
To extend the VTOC without touching the VVDS you could add the NEWVTOC(ANY) parameter to resize it on the next available freespace. This may not be near the VTOCIX and VVDS of course. You could move data off those locations first by DISNEWing the volume in SMS and moving the files that may be there. But I'm not sure if the VTOC location is that much of an issue anymore in terms of performance. (I'd be happy to hear any info on that front)
An alternative approach is to DISNEW the volume in SMS, move all the data off, delete the VVDS, reinitialise the volume with required size VTOC and Index, redefine the VVDS, ENABLE volume to SMS. Of course this depends on being able to empty the volume, which may require an outage and I understand that isn't easy to get sometimes. |

Thank you both for your quick answers,
I checked the delete/recover option but as it requires to vary the device offline, we disabled(new) the device and we'll wait till the next IPL to allocate a NEWVTOC.
