Hi,
According to my requirement, i need to merge all the Generations of GDG on hourly basis.
No of GDGs available for any perticular hour is unknown. I need to merge what are all available for that particular hour, could be 0 or 1 or.. 255 generations.
could you please suggest me in this regard.
Regards,
KDR |

Hello KDR,
I think you wnat to merge all the generation of the GDG but If you only specifiy the GDG base on the input DD it would pick up all available generation. I am not sure what would happen if there is a gap in between generations though.Hope I understood your query clearly . |

Obviously you searched the forum before posting NOT as this has been discussed many many times.
I believe that guptae has answered you question for you, although with one exception, the possibility of 0 generations being available when you will experience a JCL error.
However, the testing of the population of a GDG base has also been discussed on this very forum, so I shall leave it to you to have a good search and find the solution for yourself. |

Ok, what if when the job which merge "all such generations" is still executing and another generation is cataloged - what do you want to do in that moment of decision? |

I presume you mean concatenate, rather than merge.
Note that by specifying the GDG base alone, the files are processed in reverse order - so be prepared for that.
Anyone know why IBM does it that way? |

maybe because that's the order in which a catalog search returns them
( just guessing ) |
