I would like to know what steps I should take to troubleshoot to the message "REJ BY TAP MGT SYS" that I am receiving in the VTS I support. If someone could point me in the direction of a good manual or error message book that would be great. Thanks

Hello,

What is the message id? Where do you see this message? Which vts system is being used? What attempt was rejected?

There is no message id, the error is being given within ISMF option 10 when doing a listvol on the VTS library.

The VTS system is an 3494-L10 with nearly 40,000 virtual volumes in it.

It looks as if a request to write was rejected because the volume has permanent status within the CA1 TMC, but in ISMF the status is listed as scratch.

Hello,

Suggest you work with the storage management people to correct this "out of sync" condition between the tape management and the vts system. One, the other, or possibly both may need to be updated.

I am part of the storage management department icon_confused.gif

The situation I have is every week a healthcheck job runs which identifies the tapes that have problems (REJ..., IO ERROR, WRIT PROT, ECT). Usually there are about 2-5 that fail, however this last week 98 failed. I determined that the increase came from a job which abended, but I would still like to know why the 2-5 always pop up each week. The way we have been resolving it so far has been running a CTSSYNC job against the tapes that fail, then using the ALTER command in ISMF to put them back into scratch status. It seems like the same couple of tapes usually come up, so it might simply be a hardware issue. I'll contact tape ops the next time I this crops up and see what they'll say.
