I'm doing some storage cleanup and ran across some 3390-9 volumes that we used yeas ago and really no longer have a need for. I was doing some research to see a fast and non-disruptive was to possibly convert them to a smaller group of 3390-27, when i found the following note;
Content removed as it was stated as copyright material
I searched the Access Method Services book but did not see anything about being able to reformat a VTOC, has anyone used IDCAMS to increase a the size of a volume before, if so do you know the manual i should go to in order to do this.
Many thanks |

I don't think I've ever heard of using IDCAMS for this -- ICKDSF would be the tool of choice, and I'm pretty sure ICKDSF takes a REFORMAT command but haven't had a chance to look up the parameters for it. |

Wouldn't you need to redefine the array / volume(s) using IXFP, or whatever your manufacturers admin software is, to make it a model 27 before initialising it.
I also removed the copyright marked material from your post as without permission of the owners the posting of such may breach copyright law. |

Sorry about the copyright material Expat; typically the vendor does define/redefine the array's for us, but normally they require an outage on the subsystem to do so; which lead me down the path to see if it can be done a different method.
Robert; yea i normally use ICKDSF to init a volume which formats the VTOC and VTOCIX, but i don't know if it would convert it to a large disk pac or not, oh well, i'll keep pooking around and see what i can find, might just have to call the vendor. It's like pulling teeth to take an outage though, cheers and thanks for the feedback. |

No problems about the copyright issue. A fairly common mistake.
It may not need an outage if you can free the DASD subsystem up by moving the data to others, and then you can get the volumes offline and do the reconfig. And if you're really lucky you might be able to use the spare UCB addresses as PAV adresses.
However, I guess that you'll no doubt have a load of 24/7 datasets on the sub system. |

Older devices usually required a reconfig of an entire array.
Newer devices may be able to delete and redefine unused volumes on the fly.
What's your hardware? |
