My requirement is, my dataset resides on a tape. I want a command or a utility to get the information like vol-ser name etc of the dataset into a output dataset.

Please define etc.
Half of YOUR task is to explicitly describe what you want, not use vagueries such as etc.

You may know what you mean when you use etc. but I sure as S**T don't

Do you access to the online TMS ?

Hi Expat,

Thanks for the reply. I am mainly interested here in VOL-SER and EXPDT parameters.

I do not access online TMS, and i require above information to pass as parms to further steps.

Thanks.

Your TMS proably has a batch inquiry utility. Check that out and parse the output. CA-1 (TMSGRW) also can output a data records per volume for easier parsing.

Hello,

Suggest you talk with your tape storage management people. . .

If your system has CA-1, EARL can also be used for getting info from the TMS.

Hi,

I don't have access to CA1 online TMS.Is there any utility like GOUCOUNT to get the count of records on tape dataset without restoring it back?

Thanks,

If there is a business need for you to read the data, suggest you look into getting what you want in batch. If it is necessary to complete some requirement, suggest you have your manager request read access to the data.

What is this utility? Is it part of some tape management software?

If the "count" is not already stored somewhere, the file would have to be passed to get a count.
