Alternet Index provides another way of random accessing to a VSAM dataset.
Suppose a KSDS has primary key Employee ID. We can access any record in this KSDS if we know the Employee Id.
You can build alternate index on another field in this KSDS record say on Employee Name. If you know employee name now, You can access any record in the KSDS.
Alternate Index need not be Unique and can be built both on KSDS and ESDS.
