I have a PDS. I want to increase the primary and secondary quantity as I am getting space abends since all the primary and secondary quantity have been used. Is there any utility or tool to increase the capacity of the dataset without taking back up of it.

1) Taking a backup is the sensible thing to do
2) Use IEBCOPY to copy the PDS to a newname PDS
3) Use IDCAMS ALTER to rename the original PDS
4) See (3) - but for the new PDS

You can migrate it and recall it, it will give you a new primary space of the original pri+sec and you get 15 sec's again.

don't need to back it up. just copy it to a new pds allocated with more reasonable space, and then as expat said, rename the old and then the new.

this can all be accomplished in a 3.3 screen - then rename in 3.2 or 3.4.
and make the new pds a PDS-E.

Dick, I'd be careful suggesting that a PDS be converted to PDS/E. Our storage administrators and myself have been burned on numerous occasions trying to use PDS/E datasets. The main problem is that a PDS/E on one LPAR is un-readable on another even when they share DASD. This seems to be a unique issue with PDS/E, and so far I've not heard of any suggestions from the storage team to work around this problem.

It's too late now that you've exhausted the space, but if you know you're going to need more space in the file, you can use a SPACE parameter in your JCL while outputting to the file to increase the secondary allocation.

There is a product on the CBT tape called PDS that can be very beneficial in dealing with partitioned data sets. If it is installed at your site, it would be worth investigating in case of future problems.
