Hi, i have a requirement to list uncataloged datasets from all the lpars . I have been doing this by using ADRDSSU DUMP DATASET(INCLUDE(**) - BY(CATLG EQ NO) .I am doing this by volume wise as i got some contention problems when did with storgroup wise. But now i see some production lpras have lot of volumes which is really pain to repeat this process to all volumes. I read some where that FIE_AID can be used to get the list of uncataloged files. Can some one help me on this ? |

Why not resolve the contention problems by changing your DUMP parameters rather than making life harder on yourself? |

You have a problem looking stuff up in manuals?
TOL(ENQF) is the DF/DSS option to tolerate enqueue failures (i.e., allow for contention).
I do not know what, if anything, would be the File Aid equivalent. |

Hello Robert , thanks for answering my question .
My understanding of TOL(ENQF) is telling DFSMSdss that if it can't get Exclusive ownership it's OK - just go ahead and dump the dataset anyways no matter why or how it is being updated
But in my case contention is like My job is holding the resources( Volumes) when i use "BY(CATLG EQ NO) " option with storage group instead of volumes. People have asked me like production jobs required those volumes and your job is holding the resources, so i have to stop using the storage group in my job.
Let me know if my understanding is wrong. Thanks. |

From what I see in the manual, the volume reserve that DF/DSS requests is something you cannot get around. Since you're trying to find uncatalogued data sets, you have to hit the VTOC for each pack you're processing and that's going to put a volume reserve on the pack to prevent updates to the VTOC while you're reading it.
If your production is negatively impacted, you'll need to find another tool besides DF/DSS to do this. I am not aware of any such tools but then we try not to allow uncatalogued data sets on our system. |

Have a word with your security people to see the protection defined for using NOSCR as a parameter for DELETE.
I usually restrict this luxury to storage management and sysporogs only. |

Robert , you are correct. yes i have to hit the vtoc to find the uncataloged datasets . When i use the storgae group in my job , it is holding all the volumes in that storgrp , dont know how it makes sense though the job will fetch one volume at a time.
Dont know about exsisted security setup for using NOSCR but all that required by management is need to find out uncataloged datasets and cleanup whatever is not required. (Cost avoidence)
I would be glad If someone can help me with similar kind of tool which can fetch me this info |
