Hi,
Could anyone please tell how can I avoid my datasets going for migration? I want my datasets on DASD for a period of 1 month.
Thanks,
Rohin |

Hello,
Talk with your storage management people to see if they will set up the rules to retain your datasets for 1 month. Do not be surprised if they will not.
If you believe your datasets are more important than other people's, talk with your manager and if your manager agrees, the manager can make the request of the storage management people.
It is usually best to let the system run itself. If you haven't used the data, why not have it migrated? It is only a slight inconvenience. |

Why ? As asked by Dick, if you don't use them. |

Hi,
This is about storage guys for sure, however, at my shop every RACF ID is been given a right to use a nicely written CLIST - that clist was originally developed by storage management to allow developers to easily change the mgmtclas of a dataset. This clist will change the dataset passed in to mgmtclas=XXXXXX which means the dataset will be retained for up to 370 days since the last access date..check with some "seniors" at your shop if they are aware of such an "in-house CLIST" . |

Hello,
Why should a dataset take up online dasd space and be unused for over a year?
Let's assume hundreds or thousands of datasets per person and let's assume a few hundred people who all are not willing to be inconvenienced for a few minutes of recall and simple arithmetic says i need to buy an incredible amount of new dasd to support this.
I suppose it would be good if i had the account to sell the place the dasd . . . |

On the other hand, a data center with 10TB online was unusual only a few years ago, and now you can have that on your PC for about US$2000, so is dasd expense still an issue? I realize that enterprise dasd is probably more expensive but with SANs and server farms, it seems that DASD space should be a non-issue these days. |

But why purchase / lease more than you need to ? If through effective storage management procedures the maximum effectiveness can be obtained, why spend money when you don't need to. After all, the less money spent the more there is available for your yearly bonus.
Anyway, a proper storage environment would prevent users from making overrides to management class selection. That's the way that I do it |
