Talk to your storage people to set up a MGMTCLAS for it.
Usually, GDG's are migrated automatically with only the 0 and -1 gens left on DASD - Well, that's the way I do it |

And I wonder, why an Application Engineer would need to migrate a DSN, why the storage guys are employed there then.. |

MGMTCLAS is an SMS construct which is used to determine the hierarchical life cycle of the dataset. And in laymans terms, how long it may reside on DASD, ML1, ML2, backup strategy, delete strategy, and a few others too.
Example MGMTCLAS JOESGDGS
Can be setup to keep all GDG generations for 300 days or until they roll off - whichever comes first. They are backed up daily, and during Primary Space Management by HSM all but the 0 generation are migrated directly to HSM ML2. A backup of the GDG generation will be kept for 30 days after the dataset has been deleted.
The ACS routines and SMS constructs are maintained by your storage people. |

And MGMTCLAS can be omitted if SMS is active if an Automatic Class Selection (ACS) SMS exit is in use at your site.
If you do not specify MGMTCLAS for a new data set and the storage administrator has provided an installation-written automatic class selection (ACS) routine, the ACS routine may select a management classfor the data set. Check with your storage administrator to determine if an ACS routine will select a management class for the new data set, in which case you do not need to specify MGMTCLAS. |
