First use TMS utilty to find out the vol ser of the tape file. Such as give the tape file name in tms, it would show you details about that tape file like vol ser ,lrec etc.

Its also called Online inquiry/update TMC records in the CA-1 INQUIRY/UPDATE TMC MENU enter the Dataset name. It will return you all the details about the tape datset.

Using TMS we can get only the VOLSER details and creation date etc.
But how to get the maximum number of generations allowed for that GDG?
