How to identify how many generations should be used to GDG?

I want to know how i can know how many generation GDG should be defined when i create a new GDG?
what's the standard?

Yes Gnanas,

Standard is 255, But as per the requirement he needs to look into that how many generations he needs

you have a parameter LIMIT, if u r creating GDG using IDCAMS utility.
we can give limit=0 to 255, means that much generations are only cataloged at a time. after reaching the limit u can uncatalog or delete the generations.

what i want to say is that when i got a requirment , and if need to create a GDG, i want to know how i can know how many generations i should to setup, like limit = 20 or 30? give a sample.

How in heaven are we supposed to know what limit You should define icon_question.gif

ask the application/data analyst,

for example ... for a daily process with a weekly accumulation

You could define at the daily dataset with a 7 limit
and the weekly accumulation dataset with a 52 limit
... but thats only a sample based on calendar peculiarities,
not on application design

but again any number You choose without asking the designer is bound to be wrooong[/quote]

Hello,

Said a bit differently, a gdg is not typically defined until it has been determined how many previously created copies of the data might be needed.
