Hi,
1. I want to take a backup of a DASD file into a TAPE file .
2. Since my input file has millions of records, I need to write Output into a TAPE file to avoid space problem. So I need to create a TAPE file and use the same as REXX output file.
Could you help me in doing the same ?
Thanks in advance,
Krishna |

A tape file is nothing but a standard sequential file...
speak with Your "operations support" about tape usage standards
and ....
But.. just a question...
You spoke about taking a backup,
Do You realize that there are utilities, to do that,
much more efficient as far as
speed... optimized I/O processing
space... compressing the data
REXX should not really be the first choice to process, as You say,
millions of records ! |

Thanks for quick turn enrico.
If you have any Utility/Program for creating/processing a TAPE file, Please provide me.
Thanks in advance,

Not a problem...
...DFSSS for just storing on tape ( not processable format )
the only thing You can do is a restore to disk
...SORT ( any flavor ) to copy tha dataset to a "SEQUENTIAL" dataset
which can later on be processed by any program capable of dealing
with PS dataset
still You better speak with "operations" or "storage" support to explain
Your need and find out a solution suitable for Your environment
Remember when we answer posts we just share experiences coming
from different backgrounds and environments and not alway they fit
the O/P environment and standard practices

TAPE or DASDs are media to keep your files, you don't create them (DASD/TAPE), you just give UNIT=whatever in DCB of files...or perhaps I didn't understand this..

As I wrote in my first reply ...

A tape file is nothing but a standard sequential file... |
any program designed to write to a PS file,
can , if the jcl has been properly written,
write to a dataset residing on TAPE rather then on DISK
the GENERAL logic of any DATA PROCESSING program
is always the same
obtain data from some media/physical_support
carry on some transformation on the data read
transfer data to some other media/physical_support
P.S. ( even if before the signature )
I do not remember the source, but You should
consider that in any application
( with the exception of a few numeric intensive ones )
more than 96% of the CPU time
is just spent in .... MOVING THINGS AROUND
not doing computations in se |

Do you want to put a 2nd file on the tape?
P.S. Back in the dayze you could also demount a disk drive. Now, as far as I know, all mainframe disk is permenantly mounted. |

You can create a TAPE file as if you are creating a new sequential file. Please mention the UNIT while specifying the DCB parameters. We usually mention UNIT=TAPE to create a tape dataset. |
