password protection is STRONGLY DISCOURAGED/FORBIDDEN nowadays...

it will certainly prevent automated backups

Speak whit the security support people and
follow they guidelines on protecting datasets

Don't even go there.

As a storage guy, when I encounter password protected datasets from the HSM error report, I zap the VTOC to remove password protection, and then blat the dataset. Usually the idiot that password protected his dataset comes and asks if I can restore it. The answer is always "NO - it was password protected so wasn't backed up"

I once had a coworker ask me about password protecting a dataset. I told him resumes and football pools weren't allowed on the mainframe. After that he didn't have any interest in it.

You're welcome icon_smile.gif

Hopefully, the replies explain why this is either discouraged or completely prohibited.

The proper way to control access to a dataset is using the already in-place security on your system.
