Why spend time learning the clist language..

start using REXX, more powerful, simpler,
with DB2 and IMS access/connection facilities

Call REXX from your CLIST program. IBM offers a DB2/REXX interface. I believe it ships with DB2 for free. I had to ask our systems folks to install it.
