You're looking at a history lesson rather than somethng you might make a decision with today.
The early mainframes were not measured in mips - because non of the early systems even ran 1 (one) mip. The number of users supported was often not a factor of machine speed as much as it was a factor of how well an application was designed and implemented. Tuning was quite important. Unlike today, you could not just go buy a bigger faster "box". The 360 only had central memory of from 8k to just over 500k (that's K not meg. . . In 1972, our "big" application system supported about 120 online users. On the same mainframe, we also ran 5 or 6 other online apps that had 10-15 users each.
If you are looking for more historical info, i'd suggest you look around in the IBM sites.
If you are looking for something more specific, post a reply and we will answer as best we can. |
